Coco coir is the go-to worm bedding among vermicomposters (next to shredded cardboard). Each coco coir brick will expand into 10-12 L of coco coir when hydrated. It takes approximately 4 L of water to hydrate each brick.
Coco coir (sometimes called cocopeat) is a great sustainable alternative to other growing media and has excellent absorption properties so it can hold nutrients very well. This product goes through a "buffering" process that involves soaking the washed coir in a calcium nitrate solution before flushing again with fresh water. The process effectively removes unwanted salt (Na, Cl, K, Bo) that comes with coco coir, making it suitable as worm bedding.
